How to write an essay for medical
school application
When it comes
to writing an essay, all the same basic principles apply. Most admissions
require an essay of a given topic or a statement of purpose showing who you are,
why you are a good candidate, and your achievement plans. Include all relevant
aspects while keeping your essay concise and interesting.
The essay structure
A general essay
should have a good layout. The most important part is the introduction. It is the
part that grabs the reader’s attention. With a boring start, readers would
assume the rest would not be any different. All the essential points should be
mentioned in the first paragraph. When asked to write an essay on a certain
subject on your thoughts or point of view, you should not start out your essay
by repeating the question. It would seem more thoughtful if you read the
question, formulate ideas, and answer with those ideas. By doing this, you are
demonstrating your understanding of the question.
What you should and should not
include ?
The hardest
part is often the beginning. Most people don’t know where to start or what
should be included. Though trying to impress the admission committee, you have
to keep in mind that the essay should reflect who you are. What inspired you
and why it is important to you that you become a doctor. A typical answer of
wanting to help save lives is predictable and shows nothing apart from lack of thought.
You don’t have to come up with a perfect inspiring story of how you have always
wanted to help sick people in your country to create a good personal statement
essay. This might even come across as insincerity. It is understandable that
not everyone has a life defining moment to become a doctor. Anything that has lead
you to be on this track in your life is fine, even if it is just that you liked
biology in school.
Like your
curriculum vitae, irrelevant things you have done should not be included in
your statement of purpose. Your achievements over ten years ago such as winning
a mathematics competition in kindergarten should also be left out. You should
put what you have done in recent years including research, community services,
or any extracurricular activities that shows your contributions to the community
where you have given a certain amount of your time and effort. Buying lunch
once for an orphanage does not count and should be excluded.
Keep it simple
It is sometimes
hard not to use difficult words to show your wide range of vocabulary in an
attempt to make your essay more impressive. It is always good to use a wide
range of words but make sure that you are using it in the correct context. It
is better to use words you are comfortable with than finding a synonym that
might not work with your sentence. Have some variations while
keeping it precise. Your writing should reflect who you are as a person, your
ideas, and your goals.
Avoid excessive repetition
Avoid being
repetitive with the same words or phrases. If you are trying to stress your
point, use re-phrasing techniques or alternative words rather than repeating
yourself over and over again in one essay, you are not trying to win an
argument.
Once you have finished writing, read
your work over to make sure that the entire essay is how you want to present yourself and check for any unnecessary
parts.
